DEFINITIONETYMOLOGY

Pun Play: You NUMBER know if you’ll solve the Wordle in one!

My Gameplay: PEACE, THROW, TWICE

More interesting than blabbing on about the intricacies into my thought process while solving the puzzle is the etymology of our answer. TWICE is Old English for twies which is defined as “two times, on two occasions, in two instances.” After a long day of cleaning and visiting family, it took a few moments to process the definition. There was something peculiar about it yet I couldn’t place my finger on it. And then it dawned on me after a few more attempts. Why is the definition for TWICE explained in thrice?? Two question marks seems quite fitting. On to tomorrow!

POKER

DEFINITIONETYMOLOGY

Pun Play: WHALE that was easy!

My Gameplay: PEACE, PRESS, POWER, POKER

Surprisingly enough, the P came right off the bat for me. No complaints here! When I think of the word POKER, the iron bar used to tend fire is what came to mind. My inkling was that many would prefer a photo of the card game instead. I’m more of an old-fashioned type of guy. Do you enjoy the enlarged font size? —M

KHAKI

DEFINITIONETYMOLOGY

Pun Play: It’s Sunday, so there’s no need to HANGER-round here!

My Gameplay: PEACE, GLASS, WRATH, FOAMY, HAIKU, KHAKI

HAIKU saved my tuoockus! I’d write one right now if I could remember how. It’s been so long that I’ve forgotten! It has a certain number of lines and rhymes if memory serves me correctly. Perhaps it’s an activity I can aim to achieve before lunchtime. It’s Sunday and I really want to go back to bed. No judgment on what you choose to do with your day. I’m not CLOTHES-minded! —M

HUNKY

DEFINITIONETYMOLOGY

Pun Play: You can’t have it BUFF ways!

My Gameplay: SWEAT, LIGHT, HUMOR, HUNKY

My thought going into my word choices was that I only wanted to play positive and meaningful words. It somehow feels as though I was rewarded for it by having an easy solve, but sanity requires one to stay cognizant of reality in a forum where imagination and pretend is more enjoyable. Enjoy your Saturday!

LABEL

DEFINITIONETYMOLOGY

Pun Play: STICKER fork in puzzle #419 because it’s solved!

My Gameplay: PEARS, YOUTH, FLING, LACED, LABEL

It was a promising start, but a grind to the finish. The A & E are standard vowel choices so I would assume most of you found them early on. Double L’s and a B were key and unfortunately aren’t present in my opening word choices. TGIF everyone! On to tomorrow!

GLEAN

DEFINITIONETYMOLOGY

Pun Play: Does it DERIVE you crazy when you can’t find the last letter?

My Gameplay: SWEAT, FLOUR, PLEAD, CLEAN, GLEAN

I thought for sure I had it nailed with CLEAN! And I sort of chuckled a bit to myself as I was keying it in because that’s what I spent a majority of the day doing. The G wasn’t on my mind as we tend to see it a lot as either a suffix (-ing) or as a final letter. Enjoy your Thursday, folks. On to tomorrow!

CLING

DEFINITIONETYMOLOGY

Pun Play: The answer was SARAN me right in the face!

My Gameplay: SWEAT, PLONK, FURRY, CHIME, CLING

Not an easy task coming up with the answer to this one. My starting word ended up being a dud. My backup word blessed me with an L & N, but no answer came to mind so I played FURRY. It did nothing but end up giving me paws! The etymology on CLING states it’s of Old English origin. Sounds like it to me when I say it out loud. And even more so when I roll the CL just a little bit longer. Almost regal sounding to an extent. On to tomorrow!

PATTY

DEFINITIONETYMOLOGY

Pun Play: There was no PORTION me around today!

My Gameplay: PEACE, STORM, WINDY, PATTY

I’m sure a lot of you were thinking what I was thinking — that the answer you were about to enter wouldn’t be a nickname! And if bbthere are any folks out there actually named Patty, I sincerely do apologize for my ignorance. And then I thought, gee, it’s technically a noun too but they’re just too close that the creator of the puzzle wouldn’t confuse us like that? Then I tried it, but not before crossing my fingers! And it worked. Nothing but green. On to tomorrow!

UNFIT

DEFINITIONETYMOLOGY

Pun Play: You’re INFIRM a real treat with this puzzle!

My Gameplay: SWEAT, BLURT, UNFIT

The letters were in full so I went ahead and tried my guess and it worked. Hardly ever do I get so lucky! As I stated many times before, my strategy is to not focus too much on solving it, but rather eliminate as many letters as possible before engaging your noggin. YMMV. On to tomorrow!
